TeamSpeak Whisper on Discord: How to Talk to Every Squad

Discord has no whisper feature. You can't hold a key and send your voice into another voice channel the way TeamSpeak's whisper lists allow, and there is no Channel Commander status. You can rebuild the same setup with a voice relay bot that carries the commander's voice into every squad channel, plus a talk-back key that lets squad leaders whisper back up to command.

This guide explains how TeamSpeak whisper and Channel Commander work, how they differ from Discord's Priority Speaker, and how to recreate the command structure on Discord.

How whisper works in TeamSpeak

In TeamSpeak 3, whisper is built from whisper lists. You create a list in the client (under the Tools menu in TS3), bind it to a hotkey and choose its targets. While you hold the hotkey, your voice goes to those targets instead of your current channel. Let go and you're back to talking in your own channel.

A whisper list can target specific channels or users, or it can target groups. The group option is the one organized PvP relies on, because it can target every user who has Channel Commander turned on in a channel and its subchannels.

Channel Commander is a status each user toggles for themselves, by right-clicking their own name or with a hotkey. A typical guild setup on TeamSpeak looks like this:

  1. Each squad sits in its own channel under a shared parent channel.
  2. Squad leaders turn on Channel Commander.
  3. The commander has a whisper hotkey that targets all Channel Commanders in that channel family, or all the squad channels.
  4. Squad leaders have a whisper hotkey back to the command channel.

The commander reaches every squad without leaving the command channel, and squad leaders reach the commander without leaving their squad. Everyone else just talks in their own channel.

Channel Commander vs Priority Speaker

Guilds moving to Discord often assume Priority Speaker is the Discord version of Channel Commander. The two do different jobs.

TeamSpeak Channel Commander Discord Priority Speaker
Purpose Marks a user as a squad lead so whisper lists can target them Makes one user louder inside a voice channel
What it changes Where a whisper goes How loud the speaker is compared to everyone else
Reaches other channels Yes, when combined with a whisper list No, only the channel the speaker is in
Who turns it on The user toggles it A server admin grants the permission to a role or member
Input mode Works with TeamSpeak's whisper hotkeys Requires Push to Talk and a Push to Talk (Priority) keybind
Platform TeamSpeak client Discord desktop app only

Channel Commander handles routing. Priority Speaker handles volume. Discord describes Priority Speaker as letting someone speak "at volume 11" while others drop to volume 2, and that effect stays inside one channel. Discord Priority Speaker vs Voice Relay goes deeper on what it can and can't do.

Why Discord doesn't have whisper

Discord connects each account to one voice channel at a time, and nothing in the app sends your voice to a channel you aren't in. Guilds have asked for whisper on Discord's feedback site for years, in threads such as Add whisper as in TeamSpeak 3 and Channel commander. Discord hasn't built either.

That gap is the main reason many guilds keep a TeamSpeak server running next to Discord. TeamSpeak vs Discord for Gaming Guilds covers the rest of the comparison.

Recreating TeamSpeak whisper on Discord

A voice relay plus talk-back covers both directions of a TeamSpeak command setup. With ShotCaller:

  • A listener bot sits in the shotcaller (command) channel. A speaker bot sits in each squad channel. When the commander talks, every squad channel hears it at once. This takes the place of the commander's whisper hotkey.
  • The speaker bots also listen for Discord's Push to Talk (Priority) key. When a squad leader holds it, their voice reaches the shotcaller channel as well as their own squad. This takes the place of the squad leader's whisper back to command.

Here's how each piece maps across:

TeamSpeak Discord with ShotCaller
Commander whisper list to all squads Relay from the shotcaller channel into every squad channel
Squad leader whisper back to command Talk-back with Push to Talk (Priority)
Channel Commander status Priority Speaker permission on the squad leader role
Normal talking in the squad channel Push to Talk (Normal) in the squad channel
Backup commander Secondary shotcaller role
Coalition comms on one TeamSpeak server Alliance plan across two Discord servers

Squad members stay in their own Discord voice channels, hear the commander layered over their squad chat, and install nothing. ShotCaller lists relay latency as under 100ms.

How to set it up

Step 1: Mirror your TeamSpeak channels

Create a command channel and one voice channel per squad, grouped under one category. Use the same names your guild used on TeamSpeak so nobody has to relearn the layout.

Step 2: Create a squad leader role with Priority Speaker

In Server Settings → Roles, create a role such as Squad Leader, turn on Priority Speaker and assign it to your squad leaders. If you only want talk-back in some channels, leave the role permission off and allow Priority Speaker in each squad channel's permission settings instead.

Step 3: Bind two push-to-talk keys

Each squad leader switches to Push to Talk in User Settings → Voice & Video, then adds two keybinds in User Settings → Keybinds: Push to Talk (Normal) for the squad and Push to Talk (Priority) for command. Squad leaders who used a whisper hotkey on TeamSpeak can put the priority key on the same button.

Step 4: Configure the relay

Sign in to the ShotCaller dashboard with Discord. Pick the command channel as the shotcaller channel, select your squad channels, and choose the shotcaller roles. Set a primary role for the main commander and a secondary role for the backup. The primary role takes priority when both talk at the same time. The configuration docs explain each setting.

Step 5: Invite the bots and start

Invite the ShotCaller bots, then type /start in your server. The commander's voice now reaches every squad channel, and squad leaders can reply with their priority key.

The ShotCaller Discord bot guide has screenshots of each step, and the talk-back guide covers the keybinds in more detail.

What's different from TeamSpeak

The relay covers the command structure most guilds use, but it isn't a one-for-one copy of TeamSpeak's whisper system:

  • Routes are set in the dashboard. TeamSpeak lets you build several whisper lists and pick a target per hotkey. With ShotCaller, the commander's voice goes to the party channels you configured, so you can't whisper to only Squad 2 on the fly.
  • Whole squads hear the commander. The relay plays in the squad channel, so it works like a TeamSpeak whisper to channels. Every member of the squad hears the call, leader or not.
  • Talk-back goes to command only. A squad leader's priority key reaches the shotcaller channel and their own squad. Other squads don't hear it.
  • Talk-back needs the Discord desktop app. Priority Speaker isn't supported on mobile and requires Push to Talk.

In exchange, members no longer need a second app or a server address, nobody pays for TeamSpeak hosting, and your voice setup lives on the same Discord server as your events and announcements. The TeamSpeak alternative page covers the rest of a migration.

Whisper across allied servers

TeamSpeak whisper works within one TeamSpeak server, so coalitions have to share a server. On Discord, alliances usually run separate servers. The Alliance plan relays the commander into squad channels on your server and on one allied server, up to 24 speaker channels in total, and the allied server doesn't need its own subscription. Allied squad leaders with Priority Speaker on their own server can talk back too. The cross-server voice guide shows the setup.

Who uses this setup

  • EVE Online: fleet commanders were among the heaviest whisper users on TeamSpeak and Mumble. The relay carries FC calls into each wing channel.
  • Guild Wars 2: WvW commanders broadcast to every squad, and subgroup leaders report back with the priority key.
  • Albion Online: ZvZ callers reach every party channel, and party leaders call bombs and enemy comps back to command.

FAQ

Does Discord have a whisper feature like TeamSpeak?

No. Discord has no built-in way to send your voice into a voice channel you aren't in. A voice relay bot fills the gap by playing the commander's voice inside each squad channel.

What is the Discord equivalent of TeamSpeak Channel Commander?

Discord has no direct equivalent. With a relay, the closest match is giving squad leaders the Priority Speaker permission. ShotCaller treats their Push to Talk (Priority) key as a whisper back to the shotcaller channel.

What is the difference between Channel Commander and Priority Speaker?

Channel Commander is a TeamSpeak status that lets whisper lists target squad leads, so it controls where a voice goes. Priority Speaker is a Discord permission that lowers other voices while the speaker holds a key, so it controls volume inside one channel. Priority Speaker can't reach other channels on its own.

Can I whisper to a specific Discord voice channel?

Not with Discord alone. A relay can send the shotcaller's voice into the channels you choose in its dashboard. Those routes are fixed per setup rather than picked per hotkey.

Can squad leaders whisper back to the commander on Discord?

Yes, with ShotCaller's talk-back. Squad leaders with Priority Speaker hold Push to Talk (Priority), and their voice reaches the shotcaller channel and their own squad.

Do squad members need TeamSpeak or another app?

No. Everyone stays in Discord. Members join their squad's voice channel as usual and hear the commander through the speaker bot.

Is one person being in two Discord channels the same thing?

No, and Discord doesn't allow it anyway. One account can only be in one voice channel at a time. Can You Be in Two Discord Calls at Once? explains the limit, and How to Broadcast One Voice to Multiple Discord Channels covers the relay approach.
