Discord Priority Speaker vs Voice Relay: What Raid Leaders Need
Discord's Priority Speaker lets one person cut through a busy voice channel. While they hold their Push to Talk (Priority) key, Discord turns everyone else in that channel down so the priority speaker comes through clearly. It only works inside the channel the speaker is already in, so it can't carry a raid leader's voice into other party channels. For that you need a voice relay, and ShotCaller uses the same priority key so party leaders can talk back to the raid leader.
Below is what Priority Speaker does, how to set it up, where it stops, and how raid leaders use it together with a relay.
What Discord Priority Speaker does
Priority Speaker is a voice permission. Discord's own description is that it gives someone "the ability to speak at volume 11, when everyone else is turned down to volume 2." When a priority speaker holds their key, the other voices in the channel drop so listeners can hear the call.
The details that matter for raids:
- It's granted through a role at the server level, or through a voice channel's permission settings for a role or an individual member. Anyone with the Manage Roles permission can hand it out.
- It requires Push to Talk. Discord ignores Priority Speaker when you use Voice Activity.
- It needs its own keybind, Push to Talk (Priority), separate from your normal push-to-talk key.
- It's supported in the desktop app only. Discord's article says mobile users can't hear or set Priority Speaker, so listeners on their phones don't get the volume drop.
- Discord adds a visual cue in the voice channel so people can see who is speaking with priority.
How to set up Priority Speaker
Give the permission to a role
- Open Server Settings → Roles and pick your raid leader or officer role, or create one.
- In the Permissions tab, turn on Priority Speaker.
- Save, then assign the role to the people who should have it.
To limit it to certain channels, leave the role permission off. Open each voice channel's Edit Channel → Permissions, add the role or member, and allow Priority Speaker there.
Bind the priority key
- In User Settings → Voice & Video, set the input mode to Push to Talk (Discord's input mode guide covers the options).
- In User Settings → Keybinds, add a keybind with the action Push to Talk (Normal) for everyday talking.
- Add a second keybind with the action Push to Talk (Priority) for calls that need to cut through.
Use two keys you can press without taking your hand off your movement or ability keys. Mouse side buttons work well. While you're in Voice & Video, move the Push to Talk release delay a little above the minimum so the end of each call isn't clipped.
What Priority Speaker can't do
Priority Speaker controls volume. It doesn't decide where your voice goes. That leaves four gaps for raid leaders:
- It can't reach another channel. If your raid is split across party channels, a priority speaker in the command channel is heard only in the command channel.
- It doesn't stop anyone from talking. It lowers the other voices for listeners while the key is held, and the noise returns as soon as you let go.
- Mobile listeners get no benefit, since the mobile app doesn't support it.
- Everyone who needs the call has to be in the same channel. For a 40-person fight, that means one crowded room with no space for party-level comms.
Discord has no other built-in feature that fills this gap, because each account is connected to one voice channel at a time. Can You Be in Two Discord Calls at Once? covers that limit in detail.
Priority Speaker vs voice relay compared
| Discord Priority Speaker | Voice relay (ShotCaller) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Lowers other voices while the priority key is held | Plays the shotcaller's voice inside other voice channels |
| Reach | The speaker's own channel | Up to 12 party channels on one server, or 24 speaker channels across two servers |
| Listeners on mobile | No volume drop | Hear the shotcaller through the speaker bot like any other voice |
| Party chat | Shares the one channel with everyone | Each party keeps its own channel and conversation |
| Cost | Included in Discord | From $5/mo, with a 7-day free trial |
| Setup | A role permission and a keybind | Dashboard setup, bot invite and /start |
The two work at different layers. Priority Speaker manages who is loudest inside a room. A relay decides which rooms hear the caller.
When Priority Speaker is enough
If your whole group fits in one voice channel, Priority Speaker is often all you need. A 20-person raid in one channel with a raid leader and a couple of officers holding priority works well. The leader's calls cut through the chatter, and nobody has to manage extra channels.
Give Priority Speaker to the raid leader and maybe one or two officers. If everyone has it, the volume drop stops meaning anything.
When raid leaders need a voice relay
The picture changes once you split into channels. ZvZ, sieges, world bosses with many parties and alliance fights usually run with one voice channel per party, so each party leader can run their own group. The raid leader can only be in one of those channels.
A voice relay fixes this. With ShotCaller, a listener bot joins the shotcaller channel and a speaker bot joins each party channel. When the shotcaller talks, every party hears the call at once while staying in its own channel. Members install nothing. ShotCaller lists relay latency as under 100ms. How to Broadcast One Voice to Multiple Discord Channels has the full setup, and the cross-server voice guide covers alliances that sit on two Discord servers.
Using both: the priority key as talk-back
A relay carries the raid leader's voice out to every party. Party leaders also need to send information back, such as a flank, a downed healer or a missed timing. ShotCaller uses Discord's Priority Speaker for that return path.
The speaker bots in each party channel listen for the priority key. When a party leader holds Push to Talk (Priority), their voice goes to the shotcaller channel as well as to their own party. When they hold their normal key, it stays in the party.
| Party leader presses | Their party hears | Shotcaller hears |
|---|---|---|
| Push to Talk (Normal) | Yes | No |
| Push to Talk (Priority) | Yes | Yes |
The party leader's own channel still applies Discord's normal priority behavior, so their party hears the callout clearly too. Other parties don't hear talk-back. Two-Way Discord Voice Relay: Squad Leaders Talk Back walks through the setup with screenshots.
Priority Speaker and shotcaller roles are separate settings
It's easy to mix these up. ShotCaller's primary and secondary shotcaller roles are set in the dashboard. They decide whose voice is relayed out to the party channels, and the primary role takes priority when both callers speak at once. Discord's Priority Speaker is a Discord permission. Inside ShotCaller it decides which party leaders can talk back. The configuration docs list both settings.
A typical raid setup:
- Raid leader: primary shotcaller role in ShotCaller.
- Backup caller: secondary shotcaller role.
- Party leaders: a Discord role with Priority Speaker in their party channels.
- Everyone else: normal members with no extra permissions.
Troubleshooting: Discord Priority Speaker not working
If a priority key does nothing, check these in order:
- Permission. The user needs Priority Speaker in that specific channel. A channel override that denies it beats a role that allows it.
- Input mode. Push to Talk must be on. Voice Activity ignores priority.
- Keybind. The key must be bound to Push to Talk (Priority), not a second Push to Talk (Normal).
- Desktop app. Priority Speaker doesn't work on mobile. In a browser, keybinds only fire while the Discord tab has focus.
- Listeners. People on mobile won't hear the volume drop even when everything else is correct.
Game setups
- Throne and Liberty: the commander broadcasts siege calls to every party, and party leads use the priority key to report objective status.
- Aion 2: legion leaders relay calls to every party channel during artifact sieges, and party leaders keep their own chatter local.
- Guild Wars 2: WvW commanders use the relay for the tag's calls while subgroup leaders escalate only what the commander needs to hear.
Raids that are organized with a sign-up bot can plan party channels straight from the roster. Raid-Helper + ShotCaller shows how. Guilds moving from TeamSpeak can compare Channel Commander with Priority Speaker in TeamSpeak Whisper on Discord, and the TeamSpeak alternative page covers the rest of the move.
FAQ
What does Priority Speaker do in Discord?
It lowers the volume of everyone else in a voice channel while the priority speaker holds their Push to Talk (Priority) key. Discord describes it as speaking at volume 11 while everyone else drops to volume 2. It requires the Priority Speaker permission, Push to Talk mode and the desktop app.
Does Priority Speaker work across voice channels?
No. It only affects the channel the speaker is in. To be heard in other channels, you need a voice relay bot that plays your voice inside them.
Does Priority Speaker work on mobile?
No. Discord supports it on the desktop app only. Mobile users can't set it and don't hear the volume drop.
Why isn't my Priority Speaker working?
Check that you have the permission in that channel, that you're using Push to Talk, that your key is bound to Push to Talk (Priority), and that you're on the desktop app. A channel override that denies the permission blocks it even if your role allows it.
Can I use Priority Speaker with Voice Activity?
No. Discord only applies Priority Speaker in Push to Talk mode.
How do I make one person heard in every raid channel?
Use a voice relay. ShotCaller listens to the shotcaller channel and plays the caller's voice in every party channel at the same time, while each party keeps its own chat.
Should every party leader have Priority Speaker?
If you run a relay with talk-back, yes. Priority Speaker is what lets party leaders send callouts back to the shotcaller channel. Keep it off for regular members so the shotcaller only hears leaders.
