How to Whisper in Discord Voice (and Text)
Discord has no whisper feature, in voice or in text. To message one person privately, send a DM. To speak privately to one person, start a DM call or move to a private voice channel. To talk to one group while staying in your own channel, you need a voice relay bot, because Discord can't send your voice into a channel you aren't in.
Which option fits depends on who you're trying to reach.
Which option do you need?
| You want to reach | Use | Do you leave your channel? |
|---|---|---|
| One person, in text | A direct message | No |
| A few people, in text | A group DM or private thread | No |
| One person, by voice | A DM call or private voice channel | Yes |
| One squad, by voice, during a fight | Voice Teams with a relay bot | No |
| Every squad at once | A voice relay broadcast | No |
| The commander, from your squad | Talk-back with a priority key | No |
How to whisper in Discord text chat
Some games have a /whisper command. Discord doesn't. A message in a server channel is visible to everyone who can see that channel, so the private options are outside it.
- Click the person's name in the member list or chat.
- Type in the message box that appears, or open a direct message with them.
- For several people, create a group DM or a private thread.
DMs depend on the other person's privacy settings. If your message won't send, they may only accept DMs from friends.
How to whisper in Discord voice chat
Discord voice has no way to speak to one person inside a shared channel. Everyone in the channel hears you, and an account can only be in one call at a time. Here's what you can do.
Move to a private channel
Create a voice channel limited to the people you need, and move there. This works for planning. It's a poor fit for a fight, because you stop hearing your own channel the moment you leave.
Start a DM call
Calling someone directly is the simplest private conversation Discord offers. Joining the call takes you out of your server voice channel, so you lose your squad's comms while you're on it.
Use Priority Speaker to cut through
Priority Speaker makes your voice stand out, but it works inside one channel and everyone there still hears you. It controls volume, as Priority Speaker vs Voice Relay explains, so it can't act as a whisper.
How to talk to one group without leaving your channel
This is what most people mean by whisper when they come from TeamSpeak. Players have asked Discord for whisper for years, and it hasn't been added, so a bot has to do the routing.
ShotCaller's Voice Teams splits your party channels into named teams. A caller with a team's Discord role sits in the shotcaller channel, and their voice plays only in that team's channels through speaker bots. Other teams don't hear it.
Say Assault has its own caller and Logistics has another. The Assault caller talks, and only Assault channels hear it. Both callers remain in the shotcaller channel, so they can speak to each other without either team hearing.
Setup takes a few minutes:
- Set up your channels with the ShotCaller Discord bot guide.
- Turn on Voice Teams on the Configure page.
- Add a team, then choose its callers and channels.
- Use
/stopand then/startto apply it.
The configuration docs cover the details, and How to Run Two Shotcallers on Discord walks through an offense and defense example.
How this differs from TeamSpeak whisper
Voice Teams gives you fixed routes, set in the dashboard. Each caller's role decides which team hears them. TeamSpeak's whisper lists let one person pick a target at any moment.
So if you want a dedicated caller for each squad, Voice Teams fits well. If you want one commander switching between squads mid-fight, it doesn't do that. TeamSpeak Whisper on Discord maps each TeamSpeak feature to its closest match, and our TeamSpeak alternative and Mumble alternative pages cover a full move.
Squad leaders can still reply to command. With talk-back, they hold Push to Talk (Priority) and their voice reaches the shotcaller channel.
Who needs this
Large groups get the most from it. EVE Online fleets and Guild Wars 2 WvW squads often want wings or subgroups led separately. For a small group in one channel, a DM is usually enough.
FAQ
Is there a whisper command in Discord?
No. Discord has no /whisper command. Use a DM for text, or a DM call for private voice.
Can you whisper to one person in a Discord voice channel?
No. Everyone in a voice channel hears you. To speak privately you have to leave for a DM call or a private channel.
Can you talk to two Discord voice channels at once?
Not with Discord alone. One account stays in one voice channel. A relay bot can play your voice in other channels through speaker bots.
Can I whisper to only one squad on Discord?
Yes, with Voice Teams, if that squad has its own team. Its caller reaches only its channels. The route is set in the dashboard and applies on /stop and /start.
Does Voice Teams cost extra?
No. Every plan includes it, and every plan has a 7-day free trial.
